This image is very heartbreaking because the city had essentially collapsed. This was one of the many efforts that the army had done in a way to help them get back on their feet, they had set up a hospital which reminds me of what they would look like on an army base where you are only given a limited amount of space and resources. They had set up a kitchen as well where they would cook for them and provide them with meals. In the image above is a hospital they had made since the hospital in San Francisco is no longer in use because of the amount of damage that had been caused.
With the magnitude of the earthquake the damage of the city was extreme, buildings were down to the ground, roads collapsing, leaving it unsafe to go anywhere. This image represents some of the damage that was caused, as you can see the road is damaged as well as the buildings and surrounding items such as cars. A quake-spawned chasm cuts through pavement at the corner of 18th and Lexington streets. Cracks and separations in the roadway can be caused by lateral spreading, or the sliding of ground. In the

This image shows the damage that had happened from the fire that occurred a couple days after the earthquake had occurred , this fire had caused a lot CO2 to go into the air which would impact the air that those who lived in San Francisco as well as the environment during that time. The earthquake, despite its tragic destruction, birthed our modern understanding of earthquakes in the United States. Extensive research in the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake led to the formulation of the elastic-rebound theory related to earthquake source by Reid . With the theory of plate tectonics coming more than 50 years after the earthquake, it's appropriate to say this event helped to motivate and develop a better understanding of how such earthquakes come about.
Hi Hailey, I think your pictures are great because just by simply looking at them, one can see that this is about an earthquake. The first one shows how people had to go into tents because their homes were damaged and unsafe, the second and third show the immense power that the earthquake had. Can’t wait to see the final research of your project!
ReplyDeleteHello Hailey. I found these images to be very interesting because not only do they display the damage of the earthquake but also the specific locations. I find the first image to be interesting because you are able to talk about the aftermath and the relief efforts that took place after the earthquake. These images paired up with some personal accounts would be a great way to show how people felt about the earthquake at the time. The second image as well is terrifying on how destructive the earthquake actually was. One suggestion I have is maybe use these images with statistical data on the amount of damages that occurred during the earthquake. Good luck on your presentation and final project.
