I wanted to look into forest management and clean up in Humboldt county California. Illegal cannabis cultivation threaten the natural landscape of public lands. The legalization of cannabis in California does not threaten the black market, if anything it drives to increase. Illegal grows are usually on federally protected lands. With no regulation, the wild life is killed and physical arrangement of the forest is changed as well. Pesticides kill the native bugs and animals, waterways are dried out from the massive amounts the plants need, and waste such as plastic left after the harvest is complete. Without regulations the ecosystem could be changed indefinitely. A family member has volunteered to clean up forests in Humboldt county. I think it would be beneficial to look at what policies drive people to grow illegally on federal land, in Humboldt specifically. From there what parts of the harvest are most dangerous for the environment and look at the aftermath of these places.
