Imagery and Mapping - Eric Brummett

Image
Images and maps with Data The two pictures below are historical images from the mid to late 1940’s. As shown, the smog in the air made it hard to even see a short distance in front of you. The first Picture shows a view from a building balcony that gives a visual of how bad the pollution was and gives context to why many believed it to be a chemical attack. The second picture is interesting because the main subject of interest is wearing a gas mask. This was probably something from the Flu pandemic that plagued the world in 1918. It may seem a little extreme if the viewer did not know how bad the air quality really was. If you look closely, you'll see that the woman to the left is wiping their eyes with handkerchiefs and one of them looks as though she was coughing. These images are important to see and relate to the one from just last year and see how the only difference is location and the people. *Photo From a Balcony overlooking a main street in LA *Photo of a man in a gas mask...

Hailey Rowe : Super Blog 2- San Francisco Earthquake

Image
As I have done more research I have gained more crucial information that will help me understand the effect this had on the environment during the event and after. During this time the amount of protocols or steps to take to protect yourself in your home or where you were located during this time had been a major contributor to this event as well, with the lack of preparation for this event or natural disaster to happen no one was prepared for the fall or damaged about to come.  As I do more research it has really threw a wrench in my main question. Going into this I was unsure on how I would approach this and the direction I would go into. My research has drawn me to the environmental aspect and how the fire which was caused from the earthquake would potentially hurt those who had been living there in that time.  https://www.dartmouth.edu/~iispacs/Education/EARS18/California_2014/naturaldisaster.html This site talks about the environmental concerns in California. Superblog 2 Ramy Shbaita: Land Restoration and Social Injustice of the Concord Naval Weapons Station

This article from Business Insider provided some details about some of the new housing developments to be built on the former Naval Weapons Station at Concord from an outside source. While the Concord Community Reuse Project for the Concord Naval Weapons Station organization has a detailed reuse plan, it is somewhat difficult to know just how things are on the ground sites and what some of these plans entail aside from looking at a map. This article specifically is about the plan to transform 1/5 th of the land in the former weapons station into a community suburb with over 13,000 homes. This land used to be on base munitions storage sites during World War II and provided a unique large development opportunity for a city so close to San Francisco.   Navy weapons station with bunkers to become new homes in Bay Area (businessinsider.com)   On the tail end of the business insider article, I found developmen...

superblog 2-Humboldt cannabis cultivation

Image
I will examine the several environmental hazards caused by both legal and illegal cannabis cultivation operations. I will look at the Friends of the eel river, a nonprofit organization, who filed a law suit against Humboldt county board of supervisors for their lack of environmental regulations. There is a destruction of water ways, toxic pesticides that leave fish, birds and mammals dead, and large amounts of trash left that will not decompose.  Next I will look at the difference in regulation and impact on the ecosystem in legal and illegal grows. It is usually cartels or other drug traffickers who grow illegally.  Friends of the Eel River Demands Tougher Cannabis Regulation   2018 The Environmental Downside of Cannabis Cultivation | JSTOR Daily High Time for Conservation on JSTOR

Osvaldo-SuperBlog#2--The Dangers of Lead Based Paint: A Historical View On This Public Health Crisis In The 20th Century.

Image
For my first source I am choosing to display this image used by the Dutch Boy company which was actually the cover to a children’s book. The image dates back to 1926 and more than just a cover of a book, it also served for marketing purposes. As many of these companies often promoted the use of lead based paint as harmless and the ads and way of marketing was always very kid friendly. Of course this seems very ironic, even a bit hypocritical, considering that the ones who suffer more due to lead poisoning are children. Therefore, this primary source will be part of my project to shine light on the reasons used by activists when they accuse paint companies of consciously selling harmful lead based paint to the public.  Clair C. Patterson PhD (1965) Contaminated and Natural Lead Environments of Man, Archives of Environmental Health: An International Journal, 11:3, 344-360, DOI: 10.1080/00039896.1965.10664229       The Contaminated and Natural ...

Jose Chavez - Cedar Wildfire

Sorving, Kim. "CRYING "FIRE!" IN A CROWDED LANDSCAPE." Landscape  Architecture 94, no. 3 (2004): 26-37. Accessed February 21, 2021. http://www.jstor.org/stable/44673898 . This news article works as a primary source for my topic. This is a primary source because it consists of interviews with eyewitnesses from the Cedar Fire. There are locals and firefighters who were interviewed. Having information from locals interviews is good because it allows us to see the perspective of people who actually experienced the fire. Having the firefighters thoughts is also good because they know a lot about whether or not the fire was too dangerous or hard to put out.  Tritia Matsuda, Greta Turschak, Cheryl Brehme, Carlton Rochester, Milan Mitrovich,  Robert Fisher, Effects of Large-Scale Wildfires on Ground Foraging Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Southern California, Environmental Entomology, Volume 40, Issue 2, 1 April 2011, Pages 204–216, https://doi.org/10.1603/EN10061 I fo...

Aaron Rendon - Super Blog 2

For the first source that I “found”, I was actually lucky enough to have had a classmate suggest it to me when we did peer reviews. What I really liked about this particular source is that it is less specific to the Los Angeles Air Pollution Control District. While my final paper is going to focus on the LAAPCD, I did finally figure it may be a good idea to get safely more broad than the specific details about the LAAPCD. It focuses more on Los Angeles air pollution as a whole. It is almost a bit more anecdotal than my other sources, but I think that could help me to flesh out my argument. My next source I found is a journal article. What I like about this one, however, is that it was written in 1951. This was only four years after the establishment of the LAACPD, so it was still in its early days. It is fascinating to see their viewpoints on air pollution and smog despite it being a newer problem in the world, rather than the age old issue we know it as today. It gives insight on wh...

A Rose from the Concrete: Urban Parks in the LA Area

Image
#1  Wasteland to Wonderland: Sustainable Brownfield Redevelopment Projects in Low-Income Areas of Los Angeles by Rachel Warburton The first and best primary source I've found for this topic is a senior thesis paper by Rachel Warburton, who was earning her masters degree in environmental analysis. She provides #3 case studies in which she had conversation with multiple people and got their accounts on the debates surrounding the lack of care and funding for brownfields in urban areas. While my project will focus heavily on the development of Kenneth Hahn State Recreational Area (KHSRA) I want to also loop in the broader topic of the effects of brownfieds in urban Los Angeles.  #2  A Report on the "Public Dialogues on Urban Revitalization and Brownfields: Envisioning Healthy and Sustainable Communities" This is my first secondary source from the EPA discussing brownfields, environmental justice, and some solutions to the problems that come up. This report came out in 1996 s...

Superblog 2 1. Letter to the Environmental Protection Agency from Art Torres, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Toxics and Public Safety Management, regarding the Chemclear Hazardous Waste Treatment Facility, June 19, 1991. Juana Beatriz Gutierrez Mothers of East Los Angeles Collection My primary source is a letter to the EPA regarding a hazardous waste facility from, among other signers, the Mothers of East Los Angeles. This letter is significant because it showcases the direct action the Mother of East Los Angeles was involved in. Not only was the group protesting in person, but they were also pushing for legislation behind the scenes. This letter shows how MELA worked with other organizations to achieve their goals. The Mothers of East Los Angeles used their position in the community to address environmental problems that were directly impacting their community. They did this by working with other interest groups, as shown by the other co-signers of the letter. 2. Juana Beatríz Gu...

Andrew Davidson- Super Blog 2- The Flood of 1938

Image
In my preliminary research I have found many sources that helped me get a better understanding of the Flood of 1938. This week I decided to look for different sources that discuss more of the specifics of the Flood of 1938. Also, through my research I am beginning to see a major difference of the impact and reactions to the massive flood between Los Angeles and areas such as Riverside. My first source I found this week was “Southern California Rain and Flood, February 27 to March 4, 1938” by Lawrence H. Daingerfield. I actually found this source in another article where I mined the author’s footnotes. The author of this piece is from the Los Angeles Weather Bureau and he discusses why the increase of rain waters and the condition of the soil produced so much run-off (139). In the end of the report the author gives the amount of rain in all major counties within southern California and what the average elevation of each area. Overall, this source provides data of the flood to place a nu...

Daniel Hulbert- Super blog 2- The Central Valley Project

Image
Daniel Hulbert The Contentious origins of the Central Valley             Since the last Research blog, my questions have begun to focus on the conflict of ownership of the CVP. I wanted to focus on the fight between the state and the federal government over the project. This led me to questions like; Why did the state want to control the CVP? Why was the Federal government not willing to part with control of the Project? In my hunt to answer these questions, I found my argument for my project. The fight for ownership of the CVP was motivated more by economic issues because whoever held the water rights stood to profit either influence or actual money.             The Visual source that I found was a map that showcases annual precipitation from 1900-1960. This map illustrates a few important things. First, it shows who has the water; Northern California received hundreds of inche...

Cole Keller - Super Blog 2 - Artillery and Fort Ord

Image
Source #1:  Whaley, Derek. “Gigling & Ord.” Santa Cruz Trains, Railroads of Santa Cruz County, June 19,     2015. https://www.santacruztrains.com/2015/06/gigling-ord.html .      This is an unorthodox source to use for my research project, however it has proved necessary as there is very little information on the history of the land Fort Ord is situated upon. I saw many references to the “Gigling Reservation” with no elaboration on the original name of Fort Ord. It appears to be the family name of German Immigrants that settled the land in the 1850s to raise cattle and sheep. It came into the possession of the David Jacks Corporation which would allow the US Army to use the land before outright selling the over 15000 acres of the land to the government outright. There is also an image I plan on using from this, the one pictured below showing artillery training at the then named Camp Gigling.  Source #2: War College, and Robert B. Ga...
