Introduction- James Phaphone

Hey guys! My name is James.

I'm a 3rd year history major and I've lived in the Inland Empire for all of my life. My interest in history stems from me wanting to understand the world around me and learn about and appreciate the different cultures that exist. With UCR and the Inland Empire in general being so diverse and culturally rich, I have realized that it's important to consider the many stories and experiences that are often left out of the dominant historical narrative.

My career goals include becoming a librarian in order to hopefully promote free education and empower people with free resources and easy access to knowledge that is often times out of reach because of the cost of college books. Outside of school, my hobbies include playing piano, singing, and gardening. It's because of my home in the IE and interest in plants and caring for my own that I started to develop an interest in environmental issues.

Recently there have been many fires in the area that affected the local wildlife and people's homes, including one from last year caused by a gender reveal party. And that has sort of pushed me to become more knowledgeable about environmental policies, environmental issues, and California's own unique history with environmentalism. Just like the stories and experiences of different groups of people, the story of the environment is one that is important to listen to and consider as well.

  1. Library science is a COOL career path! My friend did that, and there are a LOT of interesting jobs. He even married a librarian!
