Introduction - Eric Brummett

 Hi! My name is Eric and I'm excited to be in this class! I am a transfer student and I am currently on my second quarter at UCR. I pretty sad that the campus is closed because I am a big people person and like to interact with others in person. I have a lot of different interest and hobbies...all of them being stupid expensive and time consuming which is why I am getting an education to hopefully become a teacher and then move up to an admin of some sort. My main obsession is cars. I am mostly a fan of JDM imports but I have an equal love for that American diesel. I like to work on cars and trucks and make them into my vision and I love speed and I try and make them faster as well. I have a 2007 Civic Si currently (in the picture) and I had a 1995 Si as well which was my first car that I unfortunately had to sell because I was out of work for a cool minute due to Covid, which sucks because that was going to be my track car. My other passions include Legos, videogames, and being outdoors. I recently took up hiking and have started to ride horses (western not English) getting in touch with my country roots. I am a huge country and rock fan and it shows in the way I act and my values. I like learning about the old ways and seeing the negatives and positives of the past and how we should learn from them. That is why I chose to become a history major. Look forward to working with Y'all!

    Cool! Hey Eric, Osvaldo is also into cars! South Central Angeleno, and he plans to open a body shop. Maybe you can collab? Or even do a project this term dealing with cars??? Emissions maybe? The history of electric versus diesel? Trucks? Crazy torque, those e-motors.

Stringfellow Acid Pits For those who live in the Inland Empire, the sight of a giant metal woolly mammoth looming over highway 60 is familiar. Dinosaurs and other extinct creatures adorn the hillside, serving as a teaching tool for school children. Many probably have memories from spent time at the Jurupa Cultural Center as kids, learning about Earth Science from founder, Ruth Kirkby. What is seemingly absent from cultural memory is the toxic waste that sits less than a mile away in the Stringfellow Acid Pits. The Acid Pits were once home to over 32 million gallons of toxic chemicals, dumped by numerous corporations and the United States military.  Introduction - David Biggs Welcome to HIST 197 - Environmental Problems in California. I'm David Biggs, your tour guide and professor. I have been a prof at UCR since 2004, and my research interests are environmental history with a special focus on Vietnam. I've written some articles and two books, Quagmire: Nation-Building and Nature in the Mekong Delta and Footprints of War: Militarized Landscapes in Vietnam .   Radium Craze in Los Angeles during the Early Twentieth Century  In the early twentieth century, a new buzz was quickly growing around Los Angeles with the discovery of an element that would glow in the dark and could be found naturally in the environment. The element in question was none other than radium, the eighty-eighth element in the periodic table was something fresh, hot, and exciting in all aspects of the early 1900s. As a result of this fresh excitement, the element could be found in numerous consumer products, medicinal practices, and in areas of congregation around the city of Los Angeles.
